Most people think they just need a website to make their business “real” → what they actually need is clarity.

After 15+ years of building websites, I’ve learned the hard way that a website cannot fix an unclear business.

IF YOU DON’T KNOW:

  • who you are

  • what you actually do/sell

  • who your business is for

  • and why anyone should care

…then your website will become an expensive guessing game.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is rushing into a website, branding, or marketing before they've validated the foundation of the business itself. They start building before they're clear on what they're building, who it's for, or whether there's real demand for it.

The result? Wasted time, wasted money, and a business that struggles to gain any traction.

Clarity doesn't appear out of thin air. It comes from asking the right questions.

Before you invest in a website, brand identity, marketing strategy, or launch plan, it's worth taking a step back to assess whether your business idea has the foundations needed to succeed.

These 10 short but strategic questions will help you identify what's working, uncover what's missing, and determine whether your idea is ready for the next stage—or needs a little more refinement first.

Grab a piece of paper (yes, actual paper) and answer each question as honestly as you can. Your future self (and your designer) will thank you.

Answer the following 10 questions honestly about your business, brand, or big idea.

  1. Describe your business in one clear sentence?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  2. Explain your offerings without using any buzzwords or LinkedIn lingo?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  3. What specific problem does your business solve, and for whom?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  4. Why does your business need to exist now / today / at this moment in time?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  5. What makes your approach different from others offering something similar?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  6. Who is your business / offerings not for?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  7. What decision are you hoping your business will help your customer or audience make?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  8. How do you want people to feel when interacting with your brand?

    _____________________________________________________________________________________

  9. What 3 words describe your brand’s personality?

    __________________________________

    __________________________________

    __________________________________

  10. Be honest:

    • ⬜ I feel clear and confident about my business and who it’s for.

    • ⬜ I have pieces, but they don’t quiet connect.

    • ⬜ I’m playing with different ideas until one feels right.

If you weren't able to confidently answer all ten questions, you've found the gap.

NOW IT’S TIME TO FIX IT

If you checked anything other than "clear and confident," don't build yet.
